Digiti Sonus is an interactive fingerprint sonification or interactive sound installation that transforms human’s fingerprints into musical sound. The idea is to allow audience to explore their own identities through unique sound generated by their fingerprint patterns based on algorithmic computing and a physical device. The captured sound is looped and harmonized with other fingerprint sound so that the result is a real time experimental music as a representation of intergrated human identities and societal communication.

Mind-controlled spermatozoa. The female body has long been a site of contention, where opposing ideologies in religion, politics, and cultural differences often play out.  The female body has become a vessel by which systems of ideas are manifested. Can a woman vote or serve in the military? Can she wear pants, or must she be veiled? Does she have agency in deciding her own reproductive health choices? Reflecting on the cultural and scientific discourses that shape notions of the female body, this project challenges the status quo. In an expression of female empowerment, a woman control something inherently and symbolical male: spermatozoa (sperm).  Through the use of a brain-computer interface, she controls the movement of sperm with the agency of her thoughts.

Designing look-and-feel using generalized crosshatching

Yuxiao Du   Ergun Akleman

Designing look-and-feel using generalized crosshatching

In this work, we have developed an approach to include any cross-hatching technique into any rendering system with global illumination effects (see Figure 1). Our new approach provide a robust computation to obtain hand-drawn effects for a wide variety of diffuse and specular materials. Our contributions can be summarized as follows: (1) A Barycentric shader that can provide generalized cross-hatching with multi-textures; and (2) A texture synthesis method that can automatically produce crosshatching textures from any given image.

Galvanic tongue stimulation (GTS) is a technology used to change
and induce taste sensation with electrical stimulation. It is known
from previous studies that cathodal current stimulation induces
two types of effects. The first is the taste suppression that renders
the taste induced by electrolytic materials weaker during the stimulation.
The second is taste enhancement that makes taste stronger
shortly after ending the stimulation. These effects stand a better
possibility to affect the ability to emulate taste, which can ultimately
control the strength of taste sensation with freedom. Taste
emulation has been considered in various applications, such as in
virtual reality, in diet efforts, and in other applications. However,
conventional GTS is associated with some problems. For example,
the duration of taste enhancement is too short for use in diet efforts,
and it necessitates the attachment of electrodes in the mouth.
Moreover, conventional GTS cannot induce taste at the throat but
at the mouth instead. Thus, this study and our associated demonstration
introduces some approaches to address and solve these
problems. Our approaches realize that taste changes voluntarily
and the effects persist for lengthy periods of time.

FairLift: Interaction with Mid-Air Images on Water Surface
Yu Matsuura / Naoya Koizumi (The University of Electro-Communications)

FairLift is an interaction system involving mid-air images, which are visible to the naked eye under and on a water surface. In this system, the water surface reflects the light from micro-mirror array plates, and a mid-air image appears. The system enables a user to interact with the mid-air image by controlling the image position of a light-source display from the water level measured with an ultrasonic sensor. The contributions of this system are enriching interaction with mid-air images and addressing the limitations of conventional water-display systems.

*All Things Fall* is based on the *Massacre of the Innocents*, a Biblical tale of infanticide, committed by King Herod to avoid losing his crown. The tale has provided dramatic subject matter for artists throughout history, including Rubens, Reni, Giotto, and Tintoretto. Depictions of the subject often show a crowd, in a frenzied and violent orgy of the brutal act of killing children. Rubens’ famous depiction (illustrated) was influential for Collishaw’s zoetrope, both in its architectural emphasis and complex figural constellations.

2016 ARS Electronica (Interactive Art)

PPT [PPT]

Frank Kolkmann (NL)
ARS Electronica ArchiveOpenSurgery.net

With *OpenSurgery*, Frank Kolkman speculates on the potential for advanced do-it-yourself surgical tools to possibly support more accessible alternatives to the increasingly expensive health services worldwide.

Inspiration for the project came from the discovery that uninsured Americans are using YouTube to share videos in which they perform medical and dental hacks on themselves as an alternative to professional care. These videos speak about how the profit-driven medical industries are widening the gap between those who can afford healthcare and those who cannot. Forcing certain groups of people to look for treatment outside of the official systems.

Extrapolating on this phenomenon, *OpenSurgery* proposes a do-it-yourself robot assisted surgery system for use in domestic keyhole surgery. By combining 3D printing and laser cutting with hacked surgical pieces and components bought online, the robot trades medical compliance for accessibility and easy distribution. Although it still requires a surgeon to operate it, with help of the files, it could theoretically be replicated almost anywhere at a mere fraction of the cost of commercial surgical instruments, challenging many of the assumptions and legally formulated standards that exist within the heavily regulated medical sector.

Even though the current prototype is functional to an extent, it is not nearly stable enough to be used in surgery yet. In its current state however it proves there is potential for alternative communities to assemble aroundand explore profoundly different approaches to – medical technologies. Admittedly also raising a number of ethical, psychological, and legal concerns.

Instead of providing an immediate solution, *OpenSurgery* intends to facilitate discussion about alternative models of healthcare. Through provocation it investigates the socioeconomic values associated with medical practice and questions the preferability of the market driven healthcare narratives we have grown so accustomed to.
